Kick-Ass Wraps up with a Formality, not a Bang
When Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s Kick-Ass was released in 2008 it became a smash, surprise (to some) success, taking off in such a way that multiple reprints of the first few issues flew off shelves even after the first issue had come and gone. For good reason, I might add. The story had a fresh, everyman feel to it, focusing squarely on the trials and failures of young Dave Lizewski, a high school comic book geek with a hopeless crush on a girl and a dad trying to help him and his son through an unbearable grief.
Ever since that first issue, Millar and company have periodically put out the sequential issues, leading up to this week’s issue eight, the final chapter in this first story arc. While captured by John Genovese, Kick-Ass and his cohorts Big Daddy and Hit-Girl have faced overwhelming odds in trying to turn the tide and win the battle, resulting in some great action and suspense. SCREAM 2009 Awards Nominees Announced!
Spike TV’s 4th annual SCREAM Awards are coming up on October 17th at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Before we get to that ceremony however, first come the nominees! Announced late this afternoon, the nominees for the awards, which honor the fan favorites in comic books, sci-fi, horror and and fantasy, certainly comprise a number of blockbusters and fan favorites from the past year. J.J. Abram’s sci-fi masterpiece Star Trek leads the way with a total of seventeen nominations, including Best Science-Fiction Movie, Best Director and Best Ensemble. Read more
More ‘Kick-Ass’: First Movie Poster is Out
The folks behind ‘Kick-Ass’ are doing a good job ramping up the marketing machine in advance of Comic-Con. The first poster for the film has just been released. Check it out:
“Kick-Ass” Comic Book and Film Headed Down Different Paths?
In a recent interview with Comic Book Resources, John Romita Jr., artist for the popular series Kick-Ass, suggested that the book and the film are heading in directions that may not correlate, as each begins to reach its respective conclusion in the near future. In discussing where he is in completing work on the comic book version of this work, Romita said that he had just about wrapped things up with issue seven and would hope to continue his work on issue eight very soon, the series’ final issue. Lumps of Coal: The 12 Least Essential Comic Characters of 2008
Coal can get a bad rap this time of year, but look at the good things it does for us: heat, energy, coal of the char kind makes a nice BBQ, but at Christmas, we only associate it with a lack of effort in gift giving or a signal that we’ve been bad, bad kids.
That’s sort of the case with the twelve heroes, heroines and villains listed below. Each has a unique set of talents and gifts, and we’ve used them for loads of action and entertainment in the past, but for these folks, 2008 just didn’t seem to be their year. Here’s hoping all of them will have a much-improved 2009.
