X-Men Forever #1: Remember When?
When Chris Claremont stepped away from most of his association with the X-Men in the early 1990’s he left behind a legacy that few writers of any comic book series could match. With storylines such as the Dark Phoenix Saga and his assistance with the start of books like Excalibur, it’s safe to say that the current and future X-Men stories will always owe a debt of gratitude to his creative touch.
Having said that, the current world of mutants looks very different today from those early 90’s images. With a much smaller membership, a new base city (San Francisco) and an extremely uncertain future, and present, does Claremont’s return to the X-Men with X-Men Forever #1 serve as a welcome departure from the current chaos, or is a letdown?
SPOILER ALERT!! PLOT DETAILS OF THIS ISSUE REVEALED BELOW!
Five Great X-Men: The Animated Series Episodes
After digging up videos, buying bootleg DVD’s and skipping through thousands of listings on eBay, fans of the early 1990’s TV series X-Men can finally save themselves trouble and possible money. On April 28th, 2009 the series finally made its long-anticipated debut on legitimate DVD. The first thirty-three episodes of the series will be released in two volumes, with hopefully the rest of the seventy-six episodes to follow.
One of the things that made the show so popular was its adherence, mostly, to the mythology of the X-Men and its vast supporting characters. Most storylines and episodes had justice done to them, and the show wasn’t afraid to portray characters such as Sabretooth and Magneto as complicated and ruthless as they appeared in the comics. The show also had no problem extending some storylines, such as the Phoenix Saga, to more than just a one or two episode arc in order to tell the story as it should be told, not watered down for time.
With that in mind, here are five memorable episodes of the series, in no particular order, that made this show the standout that it was.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Who Else is in The Movie? Part Two
In my previous article, I covered four characters appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine who may or may not be readily familiar to those used to seeing four-color adventures play out only on the big screen. In our attempts to always be a servant of the public, here are four more characters and their portrayers from this spring’s sure-to-be blockbuster film.
Deadpool - Another graduate of the Weapon X school, Wade Wilson became the wise-cracking Deadpool, a mercenary with accelerated healing, super-strength, hyper fighting ability and teleportation to boot. He began in the pages of The New Mutants and quickly found himself at odds with Cable, but eventually joined him on several missions. Since then he’s made various appearances across the Marvel universe, and has become one of the most popular anti-heroes that exist. How he will be shown in the film remains to be seen. Deadpool will be played by Ryan Reynolds.
April Fool’s? 10 “Are You JOKING” Moments in Comic Books
April Fool’s jokes usually consist of innocent, harmless phone calls, fake spiders and the like. Practical jokes take it a little further with maybe alibis, pretend emergencies or other staged incidents. Most people can laugh these off quickly, acknowledge that they were had, and get over their initial “are you kidding me!” exclamations.
So why doesn’t that always work with comic book events?
How many of us have found ourselves turning a page in one of our favorite books, checking the frames for some detail we missed, only to stop and express, loudly “Are you JOKING?!?!” after seeing that the shocking event we just witnessed did, in fact, happen. We feel like we’ve been had, hoodwinked, the plastic snake now a real cobra that’s just eaten our cat! In keeping with the spirit of the day, a look back at 10 moments from recent years that we all thought, at the time, surely were jokes.
