Sinister Spider-Man #1 = Slightly Silly Story
Marvel had a big week this week, releasing several new limited series as part of their overall Dark Reign story line. Perhaps too much of a good thing can only explain the silliness that is Sinister Spider-Man #1. Focusing on Venom AKA Spider-Man, this mercifully four-issue series will follow Mac Gargan, the man formerly known as the Scorpion who now wears the symbiote once housed by Eddie Brock, the man most people associate with the character of Venom, as he cavorts around New York on his own, apparently, hilarious misadventures.
Bubble Dwellers: Marvel Heroes We’d Like to See Used More!
Recently, IGN conducted a survey of their readers on which Marvel A-list characters they felt were the most overused/overexposed or any other “over” adjective they felt fit. Perhaps as coming as a shock to no one, the top two choices were Spider-Man and Wolverine.
Throughout the 1990’s especially, both Spider-Man and Wolverine were appearing in multiple books, some that they were anchors of and others, such as The Fantastic Four and The Avengers, had them on just because, hey, why not, everyone else was doing it! It was a marketing tool that may have helped fuel the media enterprises that both represent today, and because of that media exposure, they continue to make appearances, together and separately, in various comic books.
If all things are logical, and that’s usually the case when discussing comic books, you can’t have overexposed characters without having characters who perhaps don’t get the “page time” they deserve. Consider the following heroes who stand to have their profiles raised just a bit more. Read more
April Fool’s? 10 “Are You JOKING” Moments in Comic Books
April Fool’s jokes usually consist of innocent, harmless phone calls, fake spiders and the like. Practical jokes take it a little further with maybe alibis, pretend emergencies or other staged incidents. Most people can laugh these off quickly, acknowledge that they were had, and get over their initial “are you kidding me!” exclamations.
So why doesn’t that always work with comic book events?
How many of us have found ourselves turning a page in one of our favorite books, checking the frames for some detail we missed, only to stop and express, loudly “Are you JOKING?!?!” after seeing that the shocking event we just witnessed did, in fact, happen. We feel like we’ve been had, hoodwinked, the plastic snake now a real cobra that’s just eaten our cat! In keeping with the spirit of the day, a look back at 10 moments from recent years that we all thought, at the time, surely were jokes.
Why You Should be Reading New Avengers
By now, it’s not news that the big winner from the Secret Invasion storyline is madman/political mogul Norman Obsorn, infamous for his activity as the Green Goblin. With SHIELD dismantled and HAMMER now in its place, Norman’s poised to make a large footprint on the Marvel universe. With a good portion of his story being told in Thunderbolts, other Marvel titles are touching on aspects of Norman and his team of Avengers. All the more reason why you have to read the most recent issue of New Avengers, issue 50.
