Superstar comic book writer J. Michael Straczynski is going to run out of hands.  Already having tackled titles such as  Amazing Spider-Man and The Brave and the Bold over the course of his career, JMS will take over writing duties on two of DC Comics’ flagship characters: Superman and Wonder Woman.  Coming on the heels of the recently announced shocker that Gail Simone would be exiting her writing duties on Wonder Woman after the soon-to-be-renumbered Wonder Woman #600, news that Straczynski was taking over served to verify excitement Simone mentioned over the next writer in her open letter to Comic Book Resources explaining her exit. Wonder Woman #40 Takes Series in a Bold New Direction

January 31, 2010 · Posted in DC Comics, Uncategorized, Wonder Woman · Comment

When Wonder Woman began its most recent relaunch just over three and a half years ago, it took great pains to establish itself, cleverly, in a new light for a new time and cultural landscape.  The lead story focused on who exactly would be Wonder Woman, following the events of Wonder Woman’s murder of Maxwell Lord in order to stop his manipulation of Superman.  Donna Troy stepped into the role for a short time, but eventually Diana returned to the role she was destined to fill.  Skipping ahead now to issue forty, we find a new evolution and direction for the Amazon, one that appears to be leading her into heavy social issues territory.

Gail Simone recently revisited the mythological roots of Wonder Woman in a sprawling story arc involving her homeland, the gods and the true heritage of Wonder Woman.  Now, Simone turns her attention to the seeds of doubt, mistrust and xenophobia that undermine society, beginning with Wonder Woman #40, and it’s been one of the most dynamic and emotional shifts in the series thus far. Recent editions of DC Nation, the ongoing, last page feature in the back of DC Comics’ titles, have featured an open letter from Dan Didio of DC, throwing down an interesting gauntlet to fans of DC, most especially fans of titular heroine Wonder Woman.  Didio states, “In case you didn’t know, there is a group of Wonder Woman fans who feel that her ongoing series needs the numbering that would be reflective of her time and stature in the industry.  After all, both Superman and Batman are closing in on issue 700, and Wonder Woman, being an integral part of our trinity, should be right up there with them.” Read more

DC Comics Makes Partnership With the Muslim World

July 6, 2009 · Posted in Batman, Comic Books, DC Comics, Superman, Wonder Woman · Comment

In what many are calling a groundbreaking move, traditionally American comic book icons such as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are teaming up to fight evil with perhaps one of the few groups they haven’t come across in their many years of comic book history-a team of Muslim superheroes.  In a recent announcement, DC Comics has spoken of an upcoming partnership with Teshkeel Comics, based in Kuwait.  Paul Levitz, president and publisher of DC Comics, felt that the project was an important step in the right direction, “t is a long-standing tradition for characters to meet others in the fictional world, and over the years a lot of the superheroes have been translated into Arabic, taking on ethnic elements. But this is a nice step forward. The most difficult creative test is when you are working with the least precedent and when you’re trying to reach an audience that has a different cultural bias and different interests.” Read more

Justice League: Cry for Justice #1 Hits Hard!

Hal Jordan’s mad as hell, and he’s not going to take it anymore!  So begins a new brand of justice in the DC universe and the first issue of the seven issue mini series Justice League: Cry for Justice.  In this James Robinson penned series, a new team emerges to hit back at the community of villains, killers and general evil that has reared its collective head in recent months, causing the deaths of legendary heroes such as Batman and the Martian Manhunter.

Beginning with a showdown of sorts between the fabled Green Lantern and his colleagues in the Justice League, the stage is immediately set for the premise of this series: that the Justice League has become less about real justice and more about forming a community of heroes that are reactionary, rather than proactive and protective, especially where members of their own are concerned.  Jordan storms off, determined to seek, in his mind, real justice on the collective evil in their world.  Joining him without hesitation is long-time friend Green Arrow, who seconds Jordan’s feelings and thoughts, squarely leveled at Superman and Wonder Woman, arguably the two most prominent members of the Justice League.
