Three of the most beloved superheroes from DC Comics: Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman form the Trinity. Comic book fans have been waiting decades to see them come together on the big screen, but it wouldn't become a reality until director Zack Snyder made it happen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now, check out a featurette recapping the comic book history of the Trinity.

"In a world defined by larger than life meta-humans, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman loom largest," Jason Inman of DC All Access explains. "Two nearly all-powerful characters and the peak of human achievement. These three form the core of the Justice League and represent the three most enduring superheroes in popular mythology.

"Superman and Wonder Woman would first share the page in 1947, during a crossover with the Justice Society of America. And they'd become fast allies ten years later in the Brave and the Bold. Their relationship would be sometimes platonic and sometimes romantic, but always super-respectful.

"Though Batman and Superman first appeared together in a panel from 1941's All-Star Comics #7, their real first adventure was in 1952. This epic team-up found them both on the trail of the same criminal. Suddenly aware of their secret identities, they would then team-up on the regular for World's Finest comics. A comic dedicated to their adventures, before the modern era brought along such titles as Superman/Batman, Superman/Wonder Woman, and Trinity. In The Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller imagined the end of their friendship, with a Superman who would become a tool of a corrupt system that Batman was dedicated to bringing down. For the first significant time, these friends came to blows, creating a rift explored throughout BvS."

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis's most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film also stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams ("American Hustle," "Man of Steel") as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg ("The Social Network") as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane ("Unfaithful," "Man of Steel") as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne ("What's Love Got to Do with It," "Man of Steel") as Perry White; Oscar winners Jeremy Irons ("Reversal of Fortune") as Alfred, and Holly Hunter ("The Piano") as Senator Finch; and Gal Gadot (the "Fast and Furious" films) as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition is now available on Digital HD and Blu-ray.
