DC has been teasing the possible death of a fan favorite character for a few weeks now, and with Detective Comics #940, we finally know what happens.

Spoilers from here on out, so if you don't want to know or haven't read it yet, you can check out our other comics coverage here until you've read it yourself.

To buy you some time to think about it, here's the pitch from DC.

It began with a threat. Batman had discovered a presence in Gotham that had not only been doing his job—but completing it with military effectiveness. Furthermore, Batman and the Bat-family were being watched.

And then an idea. Batman would recruit Kate Kane to not only join him—but to train and lead a brand new team of heroes. Red Robin, Spoiler, Orphan and the villainous Clayface would form a new team of vigilantes armed with the precision and execution of a military force.

And then a problem. Little did they know that an immediate threat—The Colony—would send an army of drones to destroy potential threats to the city! As the team divides to conquer, Batwoman faces her father, potentially turning her back on her team of trainees, and Tim Drake finds the best way to stop the drones from raining destruction on Gotham. He's given them a single target. Himself.

Alright, warnings are over.

Tim Drake has rerouted the drones to focus solely on him, and in doing so has saved countless lives. In fact, Drake even makes it through the initial wave, and while he's in pretty bad shape, he's still standing. Unfortunately, there is a second wave, and while Batman, Spoiler, Nightwing, and Batwoman are trying to get to him, they can't get to his location in time.

The drones do what they were designed to do, but even as the Bat-family mourns their loss, not all is as it seems.

"The events of Detective Comics #940 feed into a larger Rebirth mystery that has been unfolding in the pages of Superman and Action Comics for over a year," said Russ Burlingame, ComicBook.com's DC expert. "The loss of Tim Drake will reverberate through the Bat-family and impact the formation of the new Teen Titans, but potentially the biggest impact of all will be what comes next for Tim himself, and what he means for the larger DC Universe."

At the moment of impact, Drake was transported to an unknown location. He wakes up in a cell by himself, with only the greetings of Mr. Oz to keep him company, who's been quite busy over in Action Comics lately. Drake was getting close to something, and while we don't know what that something is quite yet, it was imperative to remove Drake from the equation to keep it secret.

While he isn't dead, the odds of someone figuring that out aren't very promising.

Detective Comics #940 is in stores today.
