Miley Cyrus Criticizes Supergirl's Title

Miley Cyrus is not a fan of the CW's Supergirl. In a recent interview with Variety, Cyrus criticized the title of the popular CW show for perpetuating gender stereotypes.

Cyrus was asked is she believed whether there still was inequality for women in Hollywood. Cyrus replied that "[a] lot of it could be changed if we had a female president. That would give us a subconscious boost. I think people will have to realize they're looking really dated."

She then cited Supergirl as an example of Hollywood still treated women inequally. "For example, there's a show called "Supergirl." I think having a show with a gender attached to it is weird," she said. "One, it's a woman on that f***ing billboard — it's not a little girl. Two, what if you're a little boy who wants to be a girl so bad that this makes you feel bad? I think having a title like "Supergirl" doesn't give the power that people think it does."

Supergirl has typically been praised for its overt feminist themes and its decision to show women in positions of power. Producers have spoke often about the decision to embrace the show's feminism instead of shy away from it in favor of less controversial themes.

Many have questioned the decision to call Supergirl (a twenty-something in the show) a girl, but executive producers were quick to point out that Supergirl and Superwoman were different characters. In the comics, Supergirl is typically depicted as a teenager as opposed to an adult.

The show also addressed the usage of "Supergirl" in its pilot episode when Cat Grant, the media mogul who coined Supergirl, refers to herself as a "girl" as opposed to a woman. After listing her many accomplishments, Cat then pointedly says to Kara (who is Supergirl in disguise) that "if you perceive Supergirl as anything less than excellent, isn't the real problem you?"
