Using Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie (1978) and Steven Speilberg's Indiana Jones film series as inspiration, director Patty Jenkins is hoping to infuse that same type of romance, adventure, action, and humor into her upcoming superhero film. And during WonderCon, DC All Access met up with Jenkins and her set stage for what's to come in Wonder Woman.
First off: she was asked to name some of the essential Wonder Woman qualities. "Loving. Kind. Thoughtful. Badass. Powerful. Generous," she replied. "These are all very important."
As for the action scenes, how are they different from what fans have seen before? "Really, every action sequence is from her point of view and for her story," Jenkins explained. "So there was no point in the movie that were ever like, stepped out, and were like 'look at this extravaganza!' It was always, you know, she witnesses a battle on a beach that rocks her world and changes her understanding of what warfare is and then she comes to man's world and she see's a war that everybody says is impenetrable and nothing can be done about it and she says, 'What am I gonna do about it?' So that makes it fun.
"It makes it like everything else I've ever done," she continued. "Because you're just saying, like, 'Here's my character, here's the journey that they're on, how do I wanna experience that and how do you do it?' I think that there are things about that are not what superhero movies are always having to do. [They're] 100% character driven."
