While a certain friendly neighborhood superhero swings into theaters this weekend, much of this summer's movie hype has been around two comic-based properties - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Wonder Woman. And recent industry tracking indicates that the latter could possibly gross more than the former at the domestic box office.
While Guardians currently leads the domestic box office gross with almost $385 million, Wonder Woman is quickly closing the gap between the two. Despite being out for a month less in the box office than Guardians, Wonder Woman currently sits around $361.5 million, and according to Box Office Mojo, it shows no signs of slowing down.
Since the second week of Wonder Woman's release, it has outperformed Guardians in terms of weekly gross, just recently earning almost double of what the Marvel Studios film did in its fifth week. If this pattern were to continue, fans could easily see the DC Extended Universe film overtake Guardians' domestic gross - possibly within a matter of weeks.
International gross is another story altogether, with Guardians earning $857 million to Wonder Woman's current $738 million. Nevertheless, American audiences could very easily help Wonder Woman soar past expectations - and possibly be the best superhero film of the summer in the domestic box office.
