Casting information hasn't been announced for the upcoming Shazam! film yet, but DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns was clear last month that Dwayne Johnson would not be appearing as Black Adam.

Now the film's director David F. Sandberg tells Film Riot that the Shazam! script is finished, and there's a reason why the sometimes villain, sometimes anti-hero Black Adam isn't a part of it.

"So yeah, The Rock has been cast as Black Adam, but he's not going to be featured in this film," Sandberg said. "There've been variations of the script like before I came along where Black Adam was in and out and, you know. But now, this is about Shazam."

Focusing on Shazam, the hero young Billy Batson turns into by uttering a magical word, as a way of introducing the character before bringing in Black Adam may be a smart move for Sandberg. The character is lesser known than other faces in the DCEU with even Sandberg himself doing his homework by reading up on the character for the film.

For now, though, fans will just have to wait to see what Shazam! looks like without Black Adam. Filming is slated to start in early 2018. Hopefully by then we'll have more details on the cast.
