'Batman V Superman' Ultimate Edition IMAX Release Was Planned By Warner Bros.

Fans of the DC Extended Universe nearly had the chance to see the R-rated Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in IMAX theaters.

Leaked footage from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition's Knightmare sequence appeared online recently. The footage has since been removed, but it showed Batman's apocalyptic vision of the future in IMAX aspect ratio, suggesting it had been prepared for an IMAX released.

Above is the Ultimate Edition ending for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, including the cameo by Justice League villain Steppenwolf and Batman telling Lex Luthor that the villain is headed to Arkham Asylum in Gotham City. All 13 minutes of this footage has also been reformated for IMAX screens.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice added several new scenes to the film. The sequence in Africa was extended and Lois Lane's role expanded, but perhaps most important to the future of the DC Extended Universe was the appearance by Steppenwolf, general of Apokolips. That scene proved so important that Warner Bros. released in online not long after the debut of Batman v Superman in theaters.

Steppenwolf is important because he will be coming to Earth to challenge Batman, Wonder, the Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg in Justice League. The scene from the Ultimate Edition provides an important bridge between the two films

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received mixed reviews from critics and split fandom, but almost everyone agrees that the Ultimate Edition is the superior and definitive version of the film. It's a shame that fans didn't get to experience that version of the film in IMAX theaters.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice currently has a 67.71 ComicBook.com Composite Score, ranking it at number 54 on the list of highest-ranked comic book movies by ComicBook.com Composite Score. The film also has a 4.08 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Rating, making it the tenth-highest rated comic book movie of all time among ComicBook.com user.
