Gotham fans have been waiting since the show's debut to see how it would tackle Bruce Wayne as Batman and in a new promo for the show's upcoming fourth season we're finally getting a look at the fledgling Caped Crusader suited up to fight crime.

In the behind-the-scenes featurette, Bruce Wayne actor David Mazouz explained that in the new season, Bruce fully embraces his destiny to become the protector of Gotham City. You can watch the promo above.

"We see this last moment where Bruce takes on the responsibility of protecting the people of Gotham who can't protect themselves," Mazouz said. "The importance, the significance of that moment — of Bruce Wayne putting on a mask and stopping crime for the first time — was chilling. Going into season four, Bruce Wayne is going to embrace that and really start to be a masked vigilante."

At the end of the third season audiences got their first tease of Bruce's evolution into Batman. Just before the finale episode ended, a figure clad all in black wearing a long coat, a hoodie and a ski-like mask steps in to save a couple from a mugger with a gun in an alley and when the camera pans to a nearby roof Bruce is revealed to be watching over the city in the show's take on iconic Batman imagery from the comics. However, the promo shows that young Bruce is going to have a long way to go before living up to the Batman of the comics, or even the fourth season's official "A Dark Knight" tagline. In the promo, Bruce is shown jumping through windows and taking on criminals clad only in a leather jacket and hood. While the jacket, which appears to be padded, is a step in the right direction compared to the regular coat and mask from the season three finale it likely won't afford him much protection when he faces off with the much-anticipated villain, Scarecrow.

And fans won't have to wait very long to see just how terrifying a villain Scarecrow will be. The second episode of the upcoming season will be a must-watch for anyone interested in the new villain and his effect on Gotham City. At San Diego Comic Con earlier this year executive producer John Stephens hinted at just how frightening episode will be.

"We're going to fashion, especially episode two, almost a horror movie episode where we really get to see Scarecrow," Stephens said. "I think he's purely terrifying. Imagine, rather than the other versions of Scarecrow out there — because there are a lot of different versions — what if you just really tell Scarecrow as a horror movie? Because he could be scary as hell."

Audience can see how the freshly minted Batman fares and just how frightening Scarecrow is, when Gotham returns on Thursday, September 21 on FOX.
