Warner Bros. generated a lot of buzz for their DC Films division when they announced their upcoming slate of movies at San Diego Comic-Con, but few were as surprising as the announcement of Flashpoint, the title of The Flash’s solo film.
It sounds like the plan for Flashpoint is starting to come together with a new report saying production designer Beth Mickle has come aboard the film. It’s an interesting move, if true, considering the film doesn’t even have a director yet.
Considering that production designers help define a film’s a visual aesthetic through sets, location dressing, props, and wardrobes, the job is often assigned by a movie’s director. But Flashpoint sounds like it will already have one in place.
After Chris Miller and Phil Lord left the project to work on (and get fired from) the Han Solo movie, other directors like Robert Zemeckis, Seth Grahame-Smith, and Matthew Vaughn were all rumored to take over The Flash’s solo film.
Warner Bros. has yet to make an announcement on the film’s director, but the release date is reportedly still set for 2020. Of course, that will change depending on how soon a deal can be finalized.
Mickle, however, sounds like a great choice for Flashpoint. As the production designer of Nicholas Winding Refn's films Drive and Only God Forgives, she’s crafted stunning scenes to help establish those movies’ visual aesthetic.
Eye-popping dressings, unique wardrobes, and deft prop choices all combined to make both films wholly unique. Sure, the score and cinematography all worked hand in hand, but Mickle deserves praise for her achievements in those movies.
Her work can currently be seen on The Deuce from HBO, which is also impressive given that she’s helping to create a period piece set in New York City during the ‘70s.
Again, this could simply be a rumor that doesn’t pan out, or a director could be hired and prefer to work with someone they’re more familiar with. Keep in mind this report comes from the same source that said The Lion King cast Hugh Jackman as Scar, which wasn't true. At this point, Mickle is a good choice to help define the two different realities Barry Allen will travel between for his first solo film.
The character will next be seen in Justice League on November 17 (that is, if you don't count the show currently airing on The CW).
