DC Entertainment to Be Honored for LGBTQ Superhero Representation

DC Entertainment has included a number of LGBTQ superheroes and characters in comics and television in recent years and now they are being honored for their efforts.

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) announced today that DC Entertainment will receive a Visionary Award at this year's Respect Awards. In their announcement, GLSEN cited Batwoman as the first lesbian superhero and Alysia Yeoh as the first trans character in mainstream comics as examples of DC Entertainment's "commitment to showcasing diverse storylines." The CW Arrowverse shows and Gotham were also mentioned for featuring LGBTQ characters.

In a joint statement with DC Entertainment Executive Director of GLSEN Eliza Byard acknowledged the importance of superheroes in popular culture and their impact on LGBTQ youth.

"GLSEN is excited to honor DC Entertainment with the Visionary Award for their impact and innovation," Byard said. "Superheroes hold an incredibly powerful place in our popular culture. Equally powerful is for LGBTQ youth to see themselves in our world, and DC enables just that. DC's commitment to representing LGBTQ characters in all forms of media is both incredibly important and empowering."

GLSEN was founded in 1990 and works to champion LGBTQ students and issues to create inclusive K-12 schools across the country. The Respect Awards started in 2004 to honor those who serve as role models impacting the lives of LGBTQ youth. DC Entertainment joins previously announced 2017 GLSEN Respect Awards Honorees Kerry Washington, Bruce Bozzi, and Spider-man: Homecoming star Zendaya.

President of DC Entertainment and President of Warner Bros. Consumer Products Diane Nelson will accept the award at the 2017 GLSEN Respect Awards gala on Friday, October 20th in Los Angeles.
