Just an hour after "The Babel Protocol" had some The Flash viewers thinking about Batman, it seems as though the family of Dick Grayson (the first Robin) may have been snuck into the background of this week's episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow.
Like many of the Easter eggs onboard the Waverider itself, this one -- if indeed it's intentional, although it seems likely -- is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of thing. In the background of one early scene at P.T. Barnum's circus, fans might notice a group of acrobats training in the background of a shot or two whose costumes closely resemble the Robin costume.
A red unitard and yellow belt over green leggings has been the costume for all the Robins since the New 52 reboot seemingly removed the bare-legged, pixie-booted Robin costume from continuity -- and that's the look here. It could theoretically be anybody dressed like Robin, but it's Dick Grayson who (along with his family) performed at a circus throughout most of his young life.
So...are the Flying Graysons part of P.T. Barnum's circus?! As far as we know, the family of acrobats and trapeze artists never joined the Greatest Show on Earth -- but that's in the comics. Also, in a timeline not damaged potentially beyond repair by the events of the DC's Legends of Tomorrow season 2 finale. In the world of Legends, anything seems possible.
Unfortunately we will not get a direct answer, since the acrobats were never named onscreen.
When it comes to some of DC's biggest icons, Legends has typically been allowed to reference them, but not feature them right up front. Remember that season one episode in which Rip Hunter referenced "Men of Steel" and "Dark Knights" or something along those lines? Yeah, like that. It seems they may have done something similar here; B'Wana Beast gets up close and personal with the camera, while the Graysons (?) are hanging in the background, hoping to reward some attentive viewer like Starman's cosmic rod or the Jonah Hex wanted poster on board the Waverider.
DC's Legends of Tomorrow airs on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, following new episodes of The Flash.
