Marvel And DC Have Had Conversations With Tyler Perry

Entertainment mogul and Madea mastermind Tyler Perry says he's had talks about stepping into the superhero genre, but admits he wouldn't be right for a blockbuster comic book genre. ScreenRant asked Perry if he's ever been approached by Marvel or DC, and the producer, actor, writer and director says he has — but he's not interested.

"I've had a couple conversations, but I would always say, 'I'm not the guy to do this,'" Perry shared. "I'm not the guy that can bring this vision to life cause it takes such a village to pull it together, and I'm not a guy that can work with fifty other directors and producers telling you what to do, how to do it, when to do it. That doesn't work for me. I saw that in a couple of the sci-fi movies that I've been apart of and I think, 'Uhh, I'm not doing that.'"

Perry's filmography is mostly composed of original content: Perry has appeared as his popular Madea character in ten films and counting, and Perry has helmed 17 projects as director, including various Madea comedies and a handful of comedy-dramas such as Why Did I Get Married? and The Single Moms Club. Though Perry mostly appears in his own works, he's taken roles in Paramount's rebooted big screen Star Trek and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Perry also took an acting-only starring role in the 2012 action-thriller Alex Cross.

It's easy to see why studios would approach Perry: he's an accomplished and well-rounded veteran filmmaker who has a lengthy resume, and — similar to how veteran director Ron Howard stepped in to take over Solo: A Star Wars Story — Perry is a director who could be trusted to keep things in control and get a project turned in on time. Perry oversees his own production studio, Tyler Perry Studios, and it's even easier to see why the filmmaker wouldn't want to get in bed with either Marvel or DC: directors under those banners are expected to be part of a village, per Perry's words, and you have to respect his candidness in readily admitting he wouldn't be the right fit for a Marvel or DC project.
