The Girl of Steel went up against a new foe in tonight's episode - but could it be hinting at a larger DC Comics threat?

Spoilers for tonight's episode of Supergirl, 'The Faithful', below!

Tonight's episode saw Kara Danvers/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) infiltrating the Children of Rao, a religious cult that was created in Supergirl's honor. The leader of the cult was Thomas Coville (Chad Lowe), a man who Supergirl actually saved in the show's pilot episode.

As the episode persists, Coville frequently wonders if his faith in Supergirl is being tested, while Kara is adamant to prove to him that she isn't a god. By the end of the episode, Coville is locked away in prison, with the mindset that he needs to keep Supergirl focused from failing as a hero.

While Coville entered the orbit of Supergirl from pretty humble beginnings, we couldn't help but wonder - could he be the show's stand-in for Superman villain Gog?

In the comics, Gog begins as William Matthews, a missionary who is bestowed with the powers of a god. One of those powers gives him an opportunity to see into the Kingdom Come universe, and watch as its version of Superman fails to stop a nuclear attack in Kansas. After believing that the vision he saw was of his own future, he attacked his Earth's version of Superman, leading him on a crusade against people he believed to be false gods.

On the surface, theses two stories seem completely unconnected. But seeing as Coville has no counterpart in the comics, and his general attitude towards Supergirl, it certainly could be a possibility.

If Coville were to become Gog within the world of Supergirl, it would take things in a complicating - but interesting - direction. How exactly he would get his powers is currently unknown, seeing as he's locked in prison, but Arrowverse villains have certainly had weirder origin stories.

Coville having his own powers would cause Kara to further reevaluate her season-long struggle with humanity (and what lives are impacted along the way). Plus it would create an interesting sort of foil for the season's big bad, Reign (Odette Annable), to either join up with or fight against.

As of now, it's way too early to tell if Supergirl plans to turn Coville into Gog. But with Chad Lowe set to direct the seventh episode of this season, there's a chance his character could return in the not too distant future.

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
