Is The Avengers Better Than The Dark Knight?

Some will argue and debate if The Avengers is the best comic book movie ever, and The Avengers definitely deserves to be in that conversation. Is it better that The Dark Knight, which many regard as the best comic book movie ever? To answer that question, I would say in some areas it is, but in other areas it isn’t.

I've said this elsewhere, but I maintain that the Marvel movies are made for popcorn fun, not for art. The Nolan Batman films are unique in that they managed to pull off both, something that's unlikely to be replicated anytime soon. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios films are always going to be a ton of fun, but in terms of "greatest ever"? They're only as good as the next one. It's a bit like asking whether a particular James Bond film is the greatest action film of all time, ignoring all the standalone films that are artistically superior.
