Atari revealed today that it has filed a license extension for RollerCoaster Tycoon through the year 2022. Atari stated that the new deal with RollcerCoaster Tycoon creator Chris Sawyer will result in the expansion for the series, which has been one of the best-selling franchises in PC gaming history.

"We are excited to extend our long-term partnership with Chris Sawyer," said Fred Chesnais, Chief Executive Officer, Atari. "RollerCoaster Tycoon has been a cornerstone of Atari's portfolio of games across multiple platforms and moving forward there will be more fun, engaging and enduring experiences to be added to the franchise."

Atari and Chris Sawyer have been working together on these games for almost 20 years now, and this new deal reflects the continued strength of, and dedication to, that partnership. Over the decades RollerCoaster Tycoon has almost single-handedly popularized the amusement park simulator sub-genre, spawning off multiple clones and wildly successful imitations, including Planet Coaster.

The announcement of this new deal comes shortly after the enormous success of RollerCoaster Tycoon on mobile. RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic and RollcerCoaster Tycoon Touch. The latter game was released on the App Store and Google Play Store back in February, and has since been downloaded over 6.5 million times.

Whether this extension is leading to a brand new RollerCoaster Tycoon announcement, or simply expansions and additional support for the latest mobile games, remains unclear. We're rather hoping that Atari will spring back and attempt to develop an answer to Frontier Developments' Planet Coaster, which has assumed the throne as the ultimate theme park simulator and roller-coaster builder (and one of the most addictive games you'll ever play).

Until we learn more, RollerCaster Tycoon Touch will have to do, and we're okay with that. It's a fantastic game that you can pick up and start playing for free. Find it on the App Store here, and Google Play Store here.
