The Destiny universe has a surprisingly deep, complex backstory, but you wouldn't necessarily know that from playing the first game. Bungie seemingly wanted to keep all that pesky story stuff out of their players' hair, so the original Destiny hid most of its extensive lore away. One of the main ways to actually figure out what the heck was going on in Destiny was to collect Grimoire Cards, each of which granted players a Glimmer boost and an additional scrap of story.

Well, it seems like Bungie is changing their approach with Destiny 2. The game's trailers have been much more focused on personality and story, with Nathan Fillion's wisecracking Cayde-6 and Commander Zavala being front-and-center. Forbes asked Bungie whether things like Grimoire Cards would be returning given Destiny 2's increased focus on story, and it seems they're getting the boot

"The answer to that question is 'no' and the reason it's no is because we want to put the lore in the game. We want people to be able to find the lore. All the story is told through the Adventures, it's told through the characters you encounter in the world, it's told through the campaign, and it's told through scannables you find throughout the world."

It seems you're actually going to experience the story of Destiny 2, rather than just engaging in disconnected missions, then reading about it later. Just like in a real video game! How novel! Okay, that's a little snarky, but this is a big step in the right direction for a series that's always come off as just a little bland.

Destiny 2 arrives on the PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on September 8. You can check out all WWG's latest coverage, right here.
