There's been some talk as to what kind of characters you'll be able to play as in Call of Duty: WWII. Sure, you'll be taking control of a private fighting alongside his squad over most of the game, but it sounds like other characters could be taking part.

Earlier today, Sledgehammer Games took to Twitter to confirm the rumors. "Our story follows the 1st Infantry Division and Allied effort," it said. "We feature a diverse and multinational cast, but no playable Axis characters."

In addition, when the head writer was asked during today's Call of Duty: WWII live stream, he also refused to note specifics in terms of playable characters.

More than likely, Activision could be waiting for the Electronic Entertainment Expo to roll around in a few weeks. The company will no doubt be present and accounted for during Sony's pre-E3 press conference, and may also have some sort of demonstration on the show floor at its booth. So we're sure to find out just who's playable over the course of the campaign soon enough.

Keep in mind, also, that Sledgehammer Games is also working on a behind-the-scenes video series for the game, so there's also a good chance that we'll learn more about characters in the months ahead, with more discussion about the storyline and who gets involved with certain events. Obviously nothing that heads into spoiler territory, but enough of a background that gives us an idea of what we're fighting for – and, more specifically, who we're doing it with.

For now, we can only speculate, but the fact that there are no playable Axis characters (save for multiplayer, of course) indicates that Call of Duty: WWII will be following a certain structure. Now it's just a matter of seeing who we play it with, and, again we could see a diverse cast of characters across various groups, who will stop at nothing to battle against the Axis. We'll let you know any other details as soon we get them, possibly even from E3.

Call of Duty: WWII arrives on November 3rd for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
