We were very close to getting a kickass Metroid comic series starring the beloved, but often neglected, Samus Aran. This came to light after artist and comic illustrator Steve Butler posted a few images on Facebook.
"Some Metroid concept art done for Archie Comics about 6 or so years ago, when they were wanting to do another licensed video-game comic- they went with Mega-Man instead of Metroid, but they paid me for doing the drawings, and They were a blast to do! Would've been a fun book to work on!!"
Looking through the images, which we'll post in a gallery below so you can view them individually, it's a bit of a bummer that Archie Comics decided to go with Mega Man. We all love the Blue Bomber as much as the next gaming site, but Butler's Samus and Ridley had some serious soul. The details blow us away, and we love the particle spacey effects that fill and swirl around Samus' arm cannon.
We're also really enjoying this rendition of Samus proper. We can see "zero suit" and "pilot" versions of Samus with different hair styles, and we enjoy them both very much. This could have been a unique way to get to know Samus herself, apart from the games.
If you look at the sketches including Ridley, we get some great action shots of Samus in her suit. The top left drawing in particular is giving us some serious Neon Genesis Evangelion vibes, and we're totally okay with that. She looks like a slim and mobile mech doing battle with dragon demon pirate. What's not to like? Is it too late to greenlight this concept? Are you reading this Archie Comics?
Metroid fans are used to being pushed to the side, so we're taking this loss with our chins held high. After the announcement and launch of Metroid Prime: Federation Force (which is actually a great game in its own right), we've learned to properly temper our expectations and will be hoping for absolutely nothing this year at E3.
