A brand new game in the Dragon Ball universe will hit multiple systems in early 2018 with the release of Dragon Ball FighterZ, a more traditional fighting game in the series, announced today during Microsoft's E3 conference.

The news of the 2D fighter will likely have fans of the older games in the series rejoicing as it moves back to more traditional roots of beating down enemies in the Dragon Ball universe while maintaining close quarters. However, the trailer promises to bring a "new experience" to the mix, and it looks like they're delivering on that promise by combining some of the most iconic characters that the series has to offer.

It opened with some close-ups of Frieza, a villain that is no doubt one of the favorites from the franchise. Majin Buu, Cell, Goku, Vegeta, and all of the Ki blasts that players can handle were also shown in the trailer.

If one-on-one battles aren't your thing, it looks like you'll be able to take on opponents in greater numbers as well. The trailer indicated that the battles could consist of up to as many as three fighters on each team, each no doubt with their signature moves and attacks that create the rich identities of the Dragon Ball characters.

Frieza was also shown in all of his golden glory during the trailer, a form that is the Ultimate Evolution of the villain's race.

This isn't the first time that we've heard of such a new game that pits the Dragon Ball fighters against each other, but it's definitely nice to see it confirmed during the conference. We recently announced that there was a news release that came from Bandai Namco that may have meant that Dragon Ball FighterZ was on the horizon.

Developed by Arc System Works, the minds behind the Guilty Gear games, and they have a tendancy to do some unique things with their art when it comes to 2D and 3D representations, a kind of style which can certainly be seen in the trailer for the upcoming game.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is expected to be released in early 2018 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
