A Plague Tale: Innocence is a game where players do their best to avoid swarms of diseased rats by sticking to well-lit areas, but the trailer that was shown for the game at E3 makes it look quite darker than that premise in more ways than one.

Developed by France-based Asobo Studio and Published by Focus Home Interactive, A Plague Tale: Innocence is set in 1300s France during a time where disease ran wild and people were quite skeptical of illnesses and supposed witchcraft. Playing a game that focuses on The Black Death that killed so many people during the Medieval Times sounds like it'd be quite a grotesque but engaging experience anyway, but putting children into the mix like this game does makes the situation seem that much more dire.

It might be more accurate to say that the true antagonists of the game that forces the protagonist Amicia and her brother Hugo to keep running are the Inquisition, and while they certainly look like a threat, the rats are the thing that you're really going to want to avoid. The animals climb and scurry their way through the streets of villages all throughout France while you do your best to ward off both them and your human adversaries.

During those plagued times, people had all kinds of superstitious ways that they'd act on to prevent contracting the disease. Many thought that it was a punishment from God, and they could save themselves by using religious objects or asking for forgiveness. While the trailer does depict some religious symbols, it looks like your best bet here is just to stick to the light. It's the one place that the rats won't go, and losing your light source will leave you with nothing to stop the rats from devouring you as the characters' pursuer in the trailer quickly finds out.

Extinguishing your opponents' light sources is one way to get around them, but perhaps that's one of the parts of the trailer that makes it seem so disturbing. The vibe might be changed once some gameplay clips are released, but the trailer certainly makes death-by-rats seem like a much more wicked way to go down than being beaten up by a burly protagonist.

A Plague Tale: Innocence will be released in 2018 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
