Psyonix Still Trying To Work With Sony On Rocket League Cross-Play

So, in case you missed it last week, Sony provided a pretty lame excuse when it comes to not supporting cross-platform play for Rocket League on PlayStation 4. After all, players on PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch will be able to enjoy games together when it launches on Nintendo's platform later this year, but Sony…well, it just doesn't want to be part of the party.

Microsoft and Psyonix have both responded to the comments, but that isn't quite the end of the story, as the developer still hasn't given up on getting Sony involved with the Rocket League action. After all, the two worked closely together when it comes to Rocket League, since it first found its start as a PlayStation Plus title.

Speaking with US Gamer, Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham explained, "There's probably someone from Psyonix talking to someone from Sony every day. Not necessarily about cross-network, but the conversation is always ongoing. Sony is such a good partner for us."

On top of that, Dunham believes that smartphones provide proof positive that games can have cross-network play without any sort of interference – or safety issues – getting in the way. "I have this analogy, and I know I use this analogy a lot, but it's like if I have an iPhone and my brother has a (Samsung) Galaxy. Y'know, we buy the phones for their unique designs or software or whatever, but not having cross-network is like saying, 'Hey, you can't make calls to your brother because he has a different phone than you.'"

Not only that, but Microsoft has been working more on its Play Anywhere initiative between Xbox One and PC owners, and games like Forza Motorsport 7 and Crackdown will continue to support that in the near future, assuring success for games to come.

Will Sony finally relent and let Rocket League players have their fun? For that matter, will they also be a stick in the mud when it comes to Red Dead Redemption 2's cross-play plans? We'll find out soon enough.

Rocket League is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, and will debut on Nintendo Switch later this year.
