Splatoon Getting The Anime Treatment, Thanks To CoroCoro

Splatoon 2 is just a few days away from debuting on the Nintendo Switch, and once again having players question whether they're a kid or a squid. (Hey, here's a hint – you're both.) But if that's not enough, Nintendo is celebrating an entirely different way, by giving the third-person action series the anime treatment.

The shorts will premiere on the CoroCoro YouTube channel starting on August 12th. If that channel sounds familiar, it's the official channel for the company's monthly manga magazine, which aims at a younger audience (though older fans seem to like their stuff, too). Though the series won't be full-length like other anime series on the market (like Netflix's Castlevania saga), it should still be entertaining nevertheless.

As you can see from the picture above – and the Twitter message included below – Splatoon seems to be going for an energetic art style that's very similar to the original Wii U game and its upcoming Switch sequel, with characters that feature a very anime-style appearance. This should match the short-form CoroCoro Splatoon manga strips that appeared in their magazine a while back, which should be fun for fans of that sort of work.

The newest issue of the Splatoon manga is set to hit store shelves on July 21st – the same day that Splatoon 2 will make its way to stores and on the Nintendo eShop for Switch.

There's no word yet if CoroCoro's anime series will feature English dubbing or Japanese dubbing with subtitles, but we'll find out soon enough.

CoroCoro isn't the only company involved in the world of Splatoon, as Viz Media is currently hard at work on adapting the Splatoon manga in English, set for release later this year.

Hopefully, Nintendo will capitalize on this, not only with future episodes of the Splatoon manga, but also other potential series. The company did a great job adapting Star Fox to the medium quite some time ago, when Star Fox Zero originally released for the Wii U. Could a Metroid series be far behind to promote Metroid: Samus Returns and/or Metroid Prime 4? Or maybe we'll even see a Pikmin series, which could be beyond adorable?
