Sonic The Hedgehog Comics Won’t Be Published By Archie Comics Anymore

Sonic the Hedgehog has kept up a pretty consistent legacy in gaming over the last 26 years, with two major titles slated to arrive over the next few months. But a legacy that's been going just as long as Sonic's pairing with Archie Comics, as the comic line has served as the publisher of his books for nearly a quarter of a century, starting in 1993.

However, this partnership will soon be coming to an end. Sega announced on the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account earlier today that it will be concluding its partnership with Archie Comics, on the eve of San Diego Comic-Con 2017.

"After 24 years of memorable storytelling, Sega of America will conclude their Sonic the Hedgehog publishing partnership program with Archie Comics," it noted. "This does not mark the end of Sonic in comics, but signifies Sega of America's decision to take a different direction for the series that will be announced at a later date. Sega would like to thank Sonic's amazing fans for their loyalty and passion over all the years. Sega looks forward to providing more information soon."

Sega didn't provide a specific reason as to why it was ending its partnership with Archie, though it looks like it may be trying to go for a more extreme look alongside Sonic Forces, which is set to arrive later this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. However, some fans are sure to be sore about the decision, considering they've been reading about Sonic's adventures for the past 20 or so years.

There is the slight possibility that Sega could announce its next comic plans this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, as there is a Sonic Mania behind-the-scenes panel that will be happening in just a few days. That's just slight, though, as the focus may be on the game, which hits on August 15th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

So if you're a fan of the series, feel free to hunt down your favorite issues now, because the saga will be coming to an end soon enough. It'll be interesting to see where Sonic goes next.
