Galaga is a household name when it comes to video games, finding itself right up there among Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and other classic titles that retro gamers will remember fondly, challenging each other to receive the high score by shooting down spacecrafts in glorious pixelated fashion. The game is now poised to break out of its arcade format with news that a new animated series is being created based off of Galaga.

More than 35 years after the game was released, a production company called The Nuttery Entertainment is helming the production of the game's animated series through a partnership with Bandai Namco Entertainment. The Nuttery Entertainment is looking to expand on the idea of Galaga by injecting new characters into the game as well as the incorporation of additional storylines. The projects that are planned to be worked on by the production company are said to be spread out across several different formats, one of which has already been confirmed to be the animated series that will be titled Galaga Chronicles.

While they plan to create an entirely new world built around the widely-popular arcade game that so many gamers grew up with, the creators of The Nuttery Entertainment understand all too well where the game is coming from and the long journey that it's had from arcades to what's soon to be an animated series and other platforms. As they move forward with the creation of their various projects, they're fully prepared to respect the rich history that the game has built up over the years.

"We are incredibly honored to be able to work on such an amazing legacy property and help launch it into the animated space," Nuttery Entertainment co-owner Magnus Jansson said. "There is such a deep love for this game from fans around the world, and our team is excited make sure the next chapter in the Galaga saga is equally impressive and inspiring as its humble 8-bit beginnings."

Hirotaka Watanabe, an officer at Bandai Namco, also added that he's looking forward to seeing how Galaga will have its first ever story and character-based development into a new realm of media.

There's no word yet on when we could expect the animated series or other side projects, but more news will likely come soon.
