What originally started out as an April Fools' joke is becoming anything but, as the team at Arika – the creators of the Street Fighter EX franchise – are hard at work on their unnamed 3D fighting game.

The game, which made its debut at EVO 2017 last week, is shaping up to be a damn good throwback to the classic 90's fighters, including the likes of early Tekken games, Virtua Fighter and Dead Or Alive. It features a diverse cast, including the return of fan favorite Skullomania, alongside other combatants. And now, we have an even more detailed look at the game.

A new video was released by the developer, providing just over 50 minutes of footage featuring several fighters in action, including the likes of Kairi, Gardua Shirase (Hokuto) and Darun Mister, all showing off their brazen fighting moves as they take on one another in combat. Thus far, it's looking like a very impressive 90's style game, with 3D visuals combining with 2D gameplay to create a rather unique effect.

We don't see much of Skullomania in action in the gameplay, but it's a good opportunity for other characters to show off what they can do, and it appears that the game will feature strong multiplayer support, so you'll have no trouble finding someone to go up against in the heat of combat. It also looks to be a rather cool local fighting game, something that bodes well for when EVO Japan rolls around in a few months.

The game, going under the moniker The Mysterious Fighting Game (it'll change obviously), is currently set to undergo some kind of beta test over the next few months on PlayStation 4, before making its way to a full release sometime in 2018. Arika hasn't divulged when that will take place yet, but it's expected sometime before year's end.

In the meantime, you can check out the large chunk of gameplay footage above, and see how well the fighting is coming together for it. It's good to see these guys haven't lost their edge, even though they haven't worked on Street Fighter EX in years.

The Mysterious Fighting Game will release in 2018 for PlayStation 4.
