Doran's items are easy picks in League of Legends that guarantee a pretty safe start to whatever match you're in. Aside from junglers, Corrupting Potion pickers, and those who are looking to start stacking their Dark Seal quickly, it's a safe bet that most members of a team will pick a traditional starting item. You've only got options geared towards AP, defenses, or AD right now, but more items are being considered for the game that'll give different champions ways to show off their unique strengths.

One of the first items that was discussed very early on with the Runes Reforged changes was a new starting item that would be focused on attack speed. Players will recall that an attack speed item for junglers was also being considered, and while that still may be true, the one that's been revealed as of now is geared more towards ADCs and other AD-based champions who need early help with their attack speed that'll also provide a bit of survivability and last-hitting help.

"Finally, we're considering adding new starting items that offer a wider range of stats as first-buy options," Riot Wrekz explained during a post about Runes Reforged. "The current set of starting items is fairly limited, so there's plenty of room for expansion. This part of the project has just gotten underway, but it has already yielded some exciting results."

Below are the stats that the new item would yield, numbers that are extremely experimental at this point:

Doran's Dagger

  • +12% attack speed
  • +60 health
  • +2 life on hit
  • +5 bonus minion damage

A mix between a Doran's Blade, a Cull, and a Dagger, this item gives a bit of everything that an ADC might need. While new starting items are likely overdue to spice up champions' builds for the early game, there's a reason that this tentative item was revealed in the Runes Reforged post and not in a separate announcement.

With the new rune changes, champions that stack attack speed and other stats through runes to help them survive the early game laning phase will be without these bonuses. The new runes will present some stat buffs, but they won't be as straightforward as the ones we have now. Because of this, new items and even buffs to all champions' base stats are being considered.

Plenty will likely change as preseason approaches and the new rune system is fully unveiled, so we can expect to see more experimental items and changes such as this one in coming weeks.
