The dragon objective in League of Legends has gone through its fair share of changes in the past, one of the biggest ones being the shift over to Elemental Dragons that offer unique bonuses depending on which one is killed. With the Elder Dragon and four lesser League dragons currently making their randomized rotation near the bot lane, there are still plans to add in another dragon sometime in the future.

With the dragon system's big changes coming relatively recently in terms of the span of League, it's no wonder that plenty more changes can still be made to improve the system. Riot Meddler confirmed in a post about the recent runes changes that are often being discussed that a new dragon is definitely something that they hope to add eventually, but it might take a while.

"That's a potential next year thing," Meddler replied when asked about the timeframe of adding a new dragon. "Definitely want to do one, definitely won't be this year."

The response that Meddler gave was a follow-up to a broader question detailing what areas of the game were set to be looked at during the preseason period. Runes are likely to be the biggest feature that is changed in the preseason – perhaps the biggest change in quite some time – but there are other areas that are going to be touched on as well.

"Runes is going to be the big focus of pre-season," Meddler answered initially. "There'll be some other stuff in there too, but it will either be in support of runes (e.g. base stat or starting item changes) or smaller stuff (game health adjustments to items like Locket's MR aura removal last year etc). There won't be a class update or other major changes like we've done in the past (so nothing like Elemental Dragons or Plants or whatever)."

While some players have criticized the RNG factor of the dragons in the past, adding a fifth dragon that would rotate with the other four would only add to this randomness. A solution that might please most players would be swapping the current Cloud Drake out for a new dragon seeing how the Cloud Drake has widely been regarded as the least valuable dragon, often times completely ignored for better objectives until there's nothing else better to do than pick up some extra movement speed.
