Square Enix revealed today that sales of its flagship trading card game, the Final Fantasy TCG, has exceeded 5.5 million packs worldwide. In an age where so many enthusiasts compete in digital card games, this is an enormous milestone. Additionally, Square Enix revealed that the highly anticipated 'Opus III' series of cards will be available in North America starting on August 4.

With Opus III North American players will find several cards that will prove incredibly useful in rounding our their decks; cards that will give a synergistic boost to their current setups, or enable them to branch out into some elemental builds that they've been dying to try out for the first time. Opus III will feature two starter decks that focus on characters from Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy Type-0, but as always, characters and summons from several games will appear throughout the packs. The Type-0 cards are composed primarily of wind and lightning types, and forwards that will prove valuable for more aggressive players.

If you're new to the game all of this is still unfamiliar and foreign to you, don't worry. The Final Fantasy TCG is incredibly easy to learn; though intensely and satisfyingly deep once you get into it. It took me and a friend about an hour to sit down, spread everything out, go over the rules, and play through an entire round. It was a great experience. We each had a beer on a coaster and a YouTube playlist filled with the greatest Final Fantasy tunes playing in the background.

Once we both started picking up the subtleties and nuances of building a deck and combining cards' powers and effects for optimum offense and defense, we were hooked. If you have a nerdy buddy in your life who loves Final Fantasy, I absolutely recommend checking out the game when you get a chance. Opus I, II, and III starter packs would be the perfect place to start.
