As it turns out, Pokemon Go players will eventually have all their hard work in Legendary Raids counted towards their in-game medals.

Niantic's Support Twitter account confirmed that the company was working on a bug that prevented Legendary Raids from counting towards a player's Champion medals. You can check out the tweet below.

The Champion Medal is supposed to track the number of Raids that a Pokemon Go player has completed, but the game doesn't currently count Legendary Raids for that medal. That's likely because Pokemon Go originally planned on making Legendary Raids a lot more exclusive than current Raids, giving them a different feel than normal Raids. At some point, Pokemon Go scrapped those plans and opened Legendary Raids up to all players.

Although in-game medals seem like a pretty small concern for Pokemon Go, especially with all the other bugs related to the game, players have complained about the bug for weeks. Since Pokemon Go doesn't have a storyline or any real endgame, a lot of players use those medals as personal goals to keep them invested in playing daily.

As of right now, we don't know whether Pokemon Go will retroactively count Legendary Raids for the Champion Badge, or if it will just be fixed moving forward. We also don't know whether Pokemon Go will add a separate Legendary Raid badge, as one was found in asset files in the game but was not implemented when Legendary Pokemon were added to the game last month.
