If you owned a PlayStation 2, you might've discovered a fun little role-playing adventure series called Dark Cloud, produced by the team at Level-5 – the same team behind the Professor Layton series. That series lasted only two games, but created a lot of enchanting memories for fans of adventure games.

So, of course, that raises the question – why haven't we gotten a Dark Cloud 3? It seems like a series rife with potential for a sequel, but Sony hasn't said a word. Well, don't blame Level-5 for that.

Speaking with Polygon, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino noted that the company does have interest in making a new chapter of the game, but it's a matter of waiting for Sony's say-so. "There has been a lot of requests and voices to create a Dark Cloud 3 or some form of Dark Cloud. That IP is co-owned or managed by Sony Computer Entertainment, so it's not something that we can do or act upon on our own."

The team has tried to pitch the idea of a new Dark Cloud before, but, at this point, he feels that he's "not sure if that's happening now." That's not to say it's dead in the water, though – Sony has re-released Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 as part of its PlayStation 2-to-PlayStation 4 line-up some time ago, and fans have been eating it up. It could be gauging to see if the series gets a reaction before committing to a sequel.

But don't sweat Level-5. It's hard at work on another epic adventure, as it's currently developing Ni No Kuni 2: Revenent Kingdom, which is set for release sometime in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and PC. We're still waiting a bit for that one to come out, but it should fulfill those role-playing needs, even if Dark Cloud 3 isn't necessarily coming. Fingers crossed that Sony changes its mind some day – we really need to visit this magical world again.
