SplatNet Services For The Original Splatoon Are Closing Down

Original Wii U owners are losing all sorts of services as of late. Nintendo recently noted that the Miiverse would be coming to a close for the system (and 3DS as well) later this year, and now the original Splatoon for the Wii U will be losing a particular service next month.

As reported by the game's official Tumblr page, Nintendo has noted that it will be coming down the SplatNet service for the original Wii U as of September 30th. That said, that doesn't mean you won't be able to connect online.

Players will still be able to jump into matches with others through online play. That is still happening. However, access to the SplatNet site will be lost. A lot of players have used this to keep track of their weapon statistics within the game, as well as how their win/loss record was holding up, and other details.

Nintendo is more than likely shutting these services down in favor of new features for Splatoon 2, which released for Nintendo Switch earlier in the summer. The publisher has already released a new service for that particular game, titled SplatNet 2, which keeps track of player stats, but also enables players to connect via voice chat, provided they go through the elaborate set-up needed and have the right headset in order to get it done.

It's more than likely we'll see a few Wii U services shut down over the next year or so, though online play is still likely to keep going for popular games like Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. until Nintendo feels the need to transition players over to the new games on the Switch. For the time being, the party continues, even though a number of the features will be lost.
