Back in 2015, Star Wars: Battlefront innovated in a number of ways, namely with its online multiplayer modes. But a year following its release, it got a special VR-enabled mission for the PlayStation 4 version of the game, one that really drew in a number of players to the Star Wars universe. It was a bit on the short side, but still cool.
But will we be seeing it the second time around with this year’s Star Wars: Battlefront II? Actually…you probably won’t.
While the original game featured the Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission when it came out following its initial release, Battlefront II won’t be getting such a mission. Speaking with Metro GameCentral, Criterion general manager Matt Webster confirmed that the team, which engineered the VR mission, won’t be doing it a second time around. “There is no VR,” he noted.
Metro GameCentral then exclaimed, “Nothing at all?! But you were doing so well!”, and Webster simply replied, “It’s taken enough effort to make that.”
So, in essence, it sounds like the X-Wing VR Mission was an experiment, at best, instead of a full-fledged feature within the game, and Criterion and EA simply put it together to take advantage of last year’s PlayStation VR launch. But now that the virtual reality device has died down a bit in popularity, there’s a good chance that the publisher simply wants to focus more on the quality of the general game – which is understood.
Battlefront II will still have a lot going for it, including a new single player campaign that will draw you more into the Imperial side of things, as well as the expected multiplayer features that will addict fans of the original, and bring in some new ones as well. So, don’t worry, there’s still a lot to do, even without any sort of fancy VR missions to take on.
Although, to be honest, a Darth Maul simulation game would’ve been pretty sweet to see. Taste sweet double lightsaber death, you gun-toting Rebel hooligans!
