Dataminers Find Evidence for a Virtual Console Version of Pokemon Crystal

Pokemon Gold and Silver will be released tomorrow, but they could soon be followed by another popular Pokemon game.

A dataminer has discovered a patch in the ROM fileworks of Pokemon Gold and Silver that he claims is an indication that Nintendo is also working on a Virtual Console version of Pokemon Crystal.

ahahaha they left the patches for Pokemon Crystal's VC release in the GS VC ROMFS -- "CGBBXTJ0.534.patch". Classic.

Pokemon Crystal was a "sequel game" to Pokemon Silver and Gold and was the first game to prominently use a Legendary Pokemon in its storyline. A lot of fans considered Pokemon Crystal to be superior to Pokemon Gold and Silver and were quite annoyed when Nintendo didn't announce a Virtual Console re-release along with the other "Gen 2" Pokemon games.

The same dataminer also notes that Nintendo left a gap in between Pokemon Gold and Silver's Virtual Console Title IDs, which seemingly also hints at a future release for Pokemon Crystal.

When Nintendo released Pokemon Red and Blue for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console last year, they also released Pokemon Yellow at the same time. It seems Nintendo could be holding out so that fans will buy a copy of Pokemon Gold or Pokemon Silver, and then buy Pokemon Crystal when that comes out a few months later. Since Pokemon Crystal is an "enhanced" version of the previous two games, it would make sense to hold off on releasing it at the same time. After all, why buy Pokemon Gold and Silver if you could get Pokemon Crystal instead?

Of course, this is all speculation at this point. But don't be surprised when Nintendo announces Pokemon Crystal in the not too distant future.
