League of Legends' Harrowing and Tales from the Rift Are Separate Events

The Harrowing events in League of Legends offer some of the most creative skins and events in the game, but while many associate the spooky specials with Halloween, they can actually occur at any time.

Past Harrowing events have certainly carried a Halloween-y vibe, but with the introduction of the new group of events that's being called Tales from the Rift, it looks like League players can expect to receive the feeling of Halloween during any time of the year. The two occasions aren't connected to each other, so for those who were concerned that Halloween would come and go without an event that was definitively related to the Harrowing, you've got all year to look forward to expect an event.

"Harrowing and all the horrors associated with it (Black Mist, Shadow Isles) are still lurking around, just not from a Halloween-only perspective," Riot Kantayams explained. "We wanted to separate seasonal events from canon lore, so we introduced Tales from the Rift. In other words, the Harrowing is a frightful phenomenon that occurs anytime of the year, directly affecting those within the world of Runeterra."

So what's the deal with the new Tales from the Rift event then? If you remember last year's dreaded Teemoing event, you'll have a pretty good idea of what kind of events you might see during this year's Halloween.

"Tales from the Rift is a seasonal event with new and Legacy skins returning from the vault during Halloween time, and every year the story is a little different. 2016 was our first venture with Tales from the Rift: The Teemoing. While The Teemoing was theatrically diabolical, a tale from the Rift can take on any form under the umbrella of horror. So, who knows what this year's tale will be…"

That last part is an ominous teaser that doesn't lend much detail as to what'll be involved in this year's Tales from the Rift event, but it does indicate that we'll see something soon. With the Death Sworn skins that were recently released, it's quite possible that there could be an event based around those, one with missions and loot to hopefully accompany it.
