There were a lot of great games that managed to trend this year, but there were also a lot of 2016 releases that continued to be highly popular, mainly due to additional content released for them.

With that, Tumblr has compiled a list of the top trending games of 2017, and a surprise title has managed to take the first place position – Overwatch.

As you're well aware, Blizzard's competitive multiplayer game released back in May of last year, but the publisher has continued to support it with new heroes, maps and other content, keeping the popularity of the game high.

In addition, Undertale has continued to be a big hit since its release, rounding out the top five behind indie favorites Mystic Messenger and Dream Daddy, as well as Atlus USA's cult classic Persona 5.

Here's the full list of the top trending games of 2017, including some older and newer titles alike:

  1. Overwatch
  2. Mystic Messenger
  3. Dream Daddy
  4. Persona 5
  5. Undertale
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  7. The Sims 4

  25. Eldarya
  26. Stardew Valley

There are some surprises here to be sure, like Dark Souls still being on the list, despite being out for years; Team Fortress 2 is still a huge draw after all these years; and Final Fantasy XV still striking a chord with its audience. That said, though, some of this year's bigger hits made the list, including Cuphead, NieR: Automata and Stardew Valley.

We'll see how next year's list fares, but don't be surprised if a number of these games end up being repeats. Especially Overwatch.
