New Sea of Thieves Update Video Reveals a Surprising Similarity to Dark Souls

A new Sea of Thieves developer update has eager fans on the edge of their seats and gushing about this big, beautiful world just waiting to be explored. In the latest video, Sea of Thieves art director Ryan Stevenson sits down with us to talk at length about what makes this world and its diverse areas so mysterious. In fact, when I was finished with the video, I came away thinking to myself that Sea of Thieves and Dark Souls may actually share a pretty significant quality. Sounds a bit odd, right? How could Sea of Thieves and Dark Souls possibly share a major quality when the games are so very different? I'd like to point out, though, that both of these games feature large and mysterious worlds that aren't explained outright to their players. The world of Dark Souls and the world of Sea of Thieves both rely on the players themselves to pick up the reins and do a bit of the storytelling. Players are provided with environments gushing with little details and hints of what happened and who came before them, and they are left to piece together that occulted history.

This is an especially-alluring approach to story-telling in a game like Sea of Thieves, which invites players to band together with their friends and create their own epic adventures. Many games, even many multiplayer games, will take you by the wrist and pull you through a prepared narrative with preordained twists and turns, but in Sea of Thieves, the story can unfold organically as players visit certain areas in unique sequences and engage with others in unpredictable ways. No two adventures will be the exact same, and I think that's one of Sea of Thieves' greatest appeals.
