The sizeable series of changes to AP items in League of Legends is expected to come in Patch 8.4 with more than a few items being looked at.

Changes for both the most-bought and underused AP items were first previewed back in October when items like Rabadon's Deathcap and other choices were discussed. The topics mostly centered around the value of some of the most expensive AP items with Riot Meddler commenting that Deathcap was and is "too often not worth buying," and adding that Riot planned to look at AP items as a whole in the future.

More recently in November, another Rioter commented that Patch 8.3 was a goal for the AP item changes, give or take a few patches. Now that those patches are much closer, Riot Meddler returned to say that AP item changes will indeed be in Patch 8.4.

"AP item changes will also be in 8.4, forgot to include those somehow when writing this originally despite the fact we've been looking at them a lot this week," said Riot Meddler.

As for the specifics of what'll be included in the AP item work, Meddler didn't offer any definite changes, but he did give an idea of how many to expect. From big changes to small ones and even some new items, a more comprehensive list of what's changing should be released sometime next week, likely around the time that the item changes hit the PBE for testing.

"We should have a big context post on them early next week," Riot Meddler continued. "What we're currently testing (could still change) is meaningful modifications to around half a dozen items (different effects and/or build paths), probably completely one new item, number tweaks to another half a dozen or so. Something around that ballpark anyway should be what hits PBE on Tuesday."

"Spooky Ghosts" is one item in particular that was mentioned in reference to the old active effect of Frost Queen's Claim and Twin Shadows even before that. Meddler said that the effect will likely make a return somehow in PBE 8.4 or at least will be added to the PBE for testing, though it may not be under the name of a previous item.
