After waiting for Stranger Things 2 for over a year, fans were overjoyed this past Friday when the follow-up season to Netflix's smash-hit series finally debuted on the streaming service. In a very typical 2017 response, those binge-watching the show stormed Twitter over the weekend to share their thoughts on the new season.

Stranger Things dominated the social media site over the weekend, setting a new record in the process. The series became the most tweeted-about show in 2017 during the course of an opening weekend, with more than 3.7 million tweets over just three days.

As you'd probably guess, of those 3.7 million tweets, the most mentioned character was Eleven, played by the Stranger Things breakout star, Millie Bobby Brown. The young actress was nominated for an Emmy for her performance in the first season of the sci-fi series.

Following Eleven, Will, Steve, Hopper and Dustin were the other most tweeted-about characters on the show. However, if you've been keeping up with social media, it looks like Hopper may continue to rise in the rankings, as the "Dancing Hopper" meme has become incredibly popular.

Thanks to Steve Harrington, emoji fans used most over the course of the weekend was the smiling face with sunglasses. That was followed of course, by an upside down smiling face.

Stranger Things 2 is now streaming on Netflix, and the series has already been renewed for a third installment.
