Idris Elba Says He's "The Last To Know" About 'The Dark Tower' TV Series

The Dark Tower star Idris Elba said he "doesn't know" where the pending television show — also based on the Stephen King novel series — will fit in with Sony Pictures' recent big screen outing.

Informed by ScreenCrush that King said the television series is poised to be a reboot, Elba admitted he was unclear how the movie — or his character, Roland Deschain, the last of the Gunslingers — would fit into the small screen take on King's works.

"You know what? I didn't know Steven said that," Elba said. "I don't know, actually, where it lies. I must figure this out, I don't know where it lies. I'm unfortunately the last to know at this point."

"The TV series they're developing now, we'll see what happens with that," King told Vulture in October. "It would be like a complete reboot, so we'll just have to see."

Former The Walking Dead showrunner Glenn Mazzara was tapped to helm The Dark Tower television series in August. The series, which comes from producers Media Rights Capital and Sony Pictures Television, will run for 10 to 13 episodes.

Mazzara said the series would "capture the complexity of Roland's coming of age," exploring Roland's origins as the Gunslinger and his rivalry with Walter, the Man in Black. Mazzara intends to adapt The Gunslinger, Wizard & Glass, and The Wind Through the Keyhole.

The Dark Tower grossed just $111 million worldwide on a $60 million dollar budget earlier this year, arriving to theaters with a 15% critic's approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the film's poor performance at the box office, Elba mentioned the possibility of a sequel in October, saying he'd "personally prefer to do another Dark Tower film, exploring some more of the gunslinger — as a film."

"I don't know much about where they are with the TV show," he said, "but I think there's definitely talks to try and do another one."

The Dark Tower is now available on 4K and Blu-ray.
