For Captain America: Civil War, achieving worldwide domination was only a matter of time, and now it can officially say it is the highest grossing film of 2016, at least worldwide.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film is currently enjoying a worldwide tally of $978 million (68.6% of that from overseas), with it only being out just over two weeks. The film has edged out Disney's other monster hit Zootopia, which currently sits at $971.3 million, and has effectively blown by Warner Bros. blockbuster Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is holding at $870.1 million.

While it certainly has a titans grip on the worldwide box office, domestically it still has a bit of work to do. At $306.6 million, it currently resides behind Zootopia ($332.3 million), Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice ($328.3 million), Disney's The Jungle Book ($314.1 million), and FOX's lovable and sarcastic merc with a mouth Deadpool ($362.6 million). After those competitors, however, the gap is pretty wide between them and the rest of the films on this list, with the nearest being Sony's The Mermaid (Mei Ren Yu) at $553.8 million.

Plus Marvel Studios will have FOX's upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse (which drops on May 27th) to contend with as well in vying for audience dollars, but at some point in the near future I suspect Captain America: Civil War will come out ahead of pretty much all of them. It is certainly a welcome return on Disney's original $250 million dollar investment, and the train doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon.
