Marvel Studios has wowed critics, enamored fans, and conquered the box office, but there's one area of the film industry that the superhero studio hasn't excelled at, and that's awards recognition.
Marvel Studios is looking to change that and has officially tossed its hat into the ring for consideration during the upcoming awards season.
On Friday, Sept. 23, Marvel Studios held a "for your consideration" screening of Captain America: Civil War. This is the kind of screening that's meant to grab the attention of the Academy and other awards organization and convince them that the film being shown is worth honoring.
Marvel Studios has never won an Academy Award, though Marvel Studios films have been nominated seven times. Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Marvel's The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Captain America: The Winter Solider, and Guardians of the Galaxy were each nominated for Best Visual Effects. Iron Man was also nominated for Best Sound Editing, and Guardians of the Galaxy was nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Captain America: Civil War has earned some accolades already. Captain America: Civil War was nominated for 10 Teen Choice Awards (sometimes multiple times in the same category), and won two. Chris Evans won for Choice Movie Actor: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and Captain America: Civil War was named Choice Movie: Sci-Fi/Fantasy.
Captain America: Civil War was also a hit with critics, earning a 90% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and glowing critics consensus that reads, "Captain America: Civil War begins the next wave of Marvel movies with an action-packed superhero blockbuster boasting a decidedly non-cartoonish plot and the courage to explore thought-provoking themes."
Then there's the box office. Captain America: Civil War is currently the highest-grossing film of 2016, having earned $408.1 million domestic and $744.7 million international, for a combined worldwide box office total of $1.153 billion. That makes Captain America: Civil War the fourth-highest grossing superhero movie of all time.
Captain America: Civil War was certainly a successful movie. Time will tell if it is awards worthy.
Captain America: Civil War is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
