Vin Diesel Teases A Very Different Groot For Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

I am Groot. You are Groot. Really, who isn't Groot these days? The lovable character became a viral sensation after debuting in Guardians of the Galaxy. Voiced by Vin Diesel, the humanoid tree from the stars sent fans into a tizzy over his bromance with Rocket Raccoon and catchy dialogue. It's no surprise to hear that the character's return is one of the most anticipated features of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. And, now, the voice of Groot is teasing the character will be very different in the sequel.

Diesel sat down with Collider for an interview where he said "there is a difference" between Groot 1.0 and Baby Groot.

"He couldn't be more naive as Baby Groot," Diesel explained. "I always think of the Groot that we saw on the first Guardians as a college-level Groot, so he's not fully grown yet, but he's a man. And once he sacrifices himself at the end of the movie, now he has to start all over, so to speak, but we're gonna see this goofy, adorable, baby Groot thing running around the screen and just learning as he goes."

Fans will clearly see how Baby Groot's bumbling actions differ from the more mature iteration of the character from Guardians of the Galaxy. However, the alien's attitude change won't have anything to do with amnesia. Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, confirmed Baby Groot remembers everything from his previous state.

"He remembers," Feige said. "He's not mentally a baby, he is still Groot...I sort of equate it to Spock circa the end of Search for Spock and The Voyage Home."

With a de-aged Groot in tow, the Guardians will definitely have their hands full. At the end of the first film, the team lived easily enough as their sapling friend sat in a garden pot. But, in the sequel, Baby Groot seems to be well into his toddling stages and promises to wreak intergalactic havoc.

Of course, Diesel couldn't be more excited to reprise the role and provide vocals for Groot once more. The actor recently told Jimmy Fallon that he's been asked to voice Groot in 16 different languages for the sequel, a massive number compared to the six he recorded the first time around.

"I think people are gonna love this movie. I think people are gonna love Guardians. I know that, on the first one, I, like, recorded six different languages, and now James Gunn wants to increase the number of languages we do this in. So, every ADR-ed line, every moment in the movie I have to do like 15, 16 times in different languages — which are cool because, you know, it means that my voice is being heard in countries where that's not always the case," he said.

However, fans definitely shouldn't expect to hear the actor's famously baritone voice croon from Baby Groot. The actor and director James Gunn have reassured fans the younger character will have a voice that's suited for a baby. How they will do that with Diesel's voice is still a mystery though.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.
