Earlier this month, director Scott Derrickson dropped a bombshell on fans when he said he's been pitching around ideas for a Doctor Strange sequel. The acclaimed filmmaker told Den of Geek that he has been conceptualizing plans for a second film. And, now, Derrickson has specifically teased a certain storyline and character for the mystical sequel.

In an interview with IGN, Derrickson told the site he, "really like[s] the character of Nightmare and the concept that the Nightmare Realm is a dimension."

"That's early – that's like the first Strange tale. I think that's in the introductory episode of Doctor Strange, and I always loved that," he continued.

It's certainly true that Nightmare debuted alongside Doctor Strange when the comic book was in its infancy. The villain appeared in Strange Tales #110 back in July 1963 as the ruler of the Dream Dimension. The locale is where humans visited when they slept, and it was not the most pleasant vacation destination to stay at.

Considering the villain's relationship with Doctor Strange, fans wondered whether Nightmare might appear as the main villain in the hero's standalone film. However, Derrickson said the character does not feature in the movie for a very specific reason.

"We decided not to do that because that's a bit of a complex idea to try to introduce everything we do introduce and introduce the idea of nightmares themselves as being a dimension. I hope somewhere down the line we do get to explore that because I think that's super cool concept."

So, will fans see Nightmare slip into a sequel to Doctor Strange? Well, it's not out of the realm of possibility. Derrickson seems keen on expanding the baddies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe through his films and fleshing out Nightmare would be one way to do it.

During his talk with Den of Geek, the director touched upon his love of villains. When the director was asked what direction the sequel might go in, Derrickson said his team was particularly interested in villains. He even went so far as to reference baddies from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy.

"What made The Dark Knight so great was that the origin story of Batman had been well-told, and then it was time to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep," he said. "And not just the Joker, also Two-Face. It was a more visceral experience, I'd love to be able to do that for Doctor Strange."

What do you think? Would you like to see Nightmare insert himself into the MCU? Which other Doctor Strange storylines would you like to see hit the big screen?
