Reynolds biggest moment in entertainment this year is easily the runaway success of the Deadpool movie, which exceeded even Reynolds’ expectations.
When asked if he had any inkling that Deadpool would be huge of a success as it was, Reynolds told EW, “No way. I knew that this was going to speak to the very core of the Deadpool fan base, and I knew they would embrace it. I think it just really landed at a fortunate time. We were right at ‘peak superhero,’ particularly in the sense that the superheroes were all intermittingly clenching their jaw muscles and brooding. Deadpool came along and sort of threw all that on its ass.”
Producer Simon Kinberg offered praise for Reynolds’ performance as Deadpool. “He is Deadpool in a way that I have not ever quite seen an actor be and create a character,” Kinberg told EW. “The humor, the tone, the pathos came from Ryan in a very organic and almost unconscious way.”
However, after welcoming his second child into the world in September, Reynolds says the rest of the year hardly matters. “I have great kids under 2, so that’s the kind of stuff you focus on. The rest of the year they’re dead to me.”
Reynolds will return as Deadpool in Deadpool 2, which is currently in pre-production. The film will see Deadpool teaming with the time-traveling mutant soldier Cable and the lucky mutant mercenary Deadpool for further fourth-wall breaking adventures. John Wick director David Leitch will replace Deadpool director Tim Miller for the sequel.
