It's no secret that when Hugh Jackman appears on screen in Logan, it'll be his last portrayal of the titular character. Jackman and director James Mangold are partnering together to make sure the character goes out with a bang and from the clips and teasers we've seen thus far, the movie will certainly live up to the hype.

With such an overwhelming need to make sure they served the character right, it seems as if there were more than a few options on the table with how they wanted to direct the movie. In a recent interview with Screenrant, Mangold dove in and talked about some of the initial ideas he had for the film.

"A couple months after we wrapped, I had this idea, it was originally that Charles [Xavier] and Logan were hiding out in a Kentucky bourbon, an abandoned bourbon factory and that he was in a tank, an abandoned tank in a bourbon factory," Mangold told Screenrant. "The idea occurred to me to make a movie about family and the idea of using, I kept doing more and more research. The Greg Kyle 'Innocence Lost' series about X-23 caught my attention and the idea of doing a movie in which we find Logan with a daughter seemed like a really interesting family dynamic – caring for ailing dad and then discovering you have a kid. Particularly for a character like Logan, who is so loathed to having any intimate connections with anyone, it seemed like the ultimate set of obstacles to put in front of him, much bigger than a super villain from another planet."

Logan takes place in the year 2029, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan's vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn't seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn't over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.

Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
