Evangeline Lilly participated in a spotlight panel at Emerald City Comic-Con today during which she talked about her career.
While the panel included discussions about Lilly’s roles on the TV series Lost and the Hobbit films, she also talked about playing Hope Van Dyne in Marvel’s Ant-Man.
Lilly said she was unfamiliar with Marvel Studios’ brand of filmmaking before entering discussions to do the role.
“How have I missed these guys who are making really cool superheroes who don’t take themselves too seriously,” Lilly said, before calling out “DC films” specifically for their approach.
When original project director Edgar Wright originally called her, she’d only seen Iron Man and didn’t “want to do a stupid superhero movie.”

But Wright’s involvement made her interested in the project, and she stayed on after his departure and Peyton Reed took over.
“And Paul Rudd, which makes it even cooler. Who casts Paul Rudd as a superhero? Nobody. So I was like, I gotta check out these Marvel guys and see what they’re up to, and apparently they were up to really cool ****.”
She added, “now a year from now I get to put on a wasp costume and buzz around,” referring to the sequel film, Ant-Man and the Wasp.
